Newcastle United, as measured up against all the other Premier League teams.
How do we gauge it?
Which Premier League team is outperforming a rival?
For Newcastle United and the rest, it surely comes down to what it always does.
How many matches you are winning!
So I have had a look at all 20 Premier League clubs this season…
We are now six months into the 2024/25 season, this is how many matches each Premier League team has won (and lost), in Premier League AND domestic cup competitions (as of the morning of 16 February 2025):
22 and 3 Liverpool
20 and 8 Newcastle United
16 and 7 Forest
16 and 8 Man City
14 and 6 Bournemouth
14 and 8 Chelsea
13 and 7 Fulham
13 and 8 Villa
13 and 8 Brighton
12 and 10 Palace
12 and 11 Man U
12 and 15 Tottenham
11 and 13 Brentford
9 and 11 Everton
8 and 14 West Ham
8 and 16 Wolves
7 and 18 Leicester
6 and 22 Southampton
4 and 16 Ipswich
I thought maybe a ‘little’ bit of perspective needed, following the match at the Etihad on Saturday.
As you can see above, when it comes to domestic competitions this season, Newcastle United are second most successful, when it comes to winning football matches.
It is still only Liverpool who have won more domestic matches this season than Eddie Howe’s side, only the two more than NUFC as things currently stand.
Despite the loss at Man City, Newcastle United still two more wins than Arsenal.
Then it is Newcastle with four more wins than Forest and Man City.
Six more than Chelsea and Bournemouth, even more wins than that compared to the rest.
Some Newcastle United fans with a ridiculous over the top reaction after the defeat at Man City.
A bit of a recurring theme, certain Newcastle supporters seeing any defeat as a huge disaster that can’t in any way be taken on the chin, that sometimes you play well, other times not so well. The same when it comes to the opposition.
The last four months and twenty two United matches (all competitions), have seen fifteen wins, two draws and only the five defeats since late October. To win three times as many matches as you lose over a four month period, does that not help you to give some perspective when things like Saturday happen?
Nobody is saying it was anything but a really poor performance against Man City, but to not give credit for this excellent run of form (including 12 wins in the last 15) across four months, is pathetic.
