England have secured a fifth Champions League berth for next season, the extra place confirmed after Arsenal beat Sporting 1-0 in Tuesday's quarter-final first leg. Up to seven English clubs could still make the competition.

According to L'Équipe, UEFA allocates additional berths to the two best-performing leagues across all European competitions, and England lead this season's table on 25.013, with Spain second on 20.281. It will be the second year in a row the Premier League has at least five clubs.

The fight for fifth is fierce. The top four have pulled clear, Arsenal on 70 points, Manchester City 61, Manchester United 55 and Aston Villa 54. Liverpool sit fifth on 49 with several teams in pursuit.

Only seven points separate Liverpool from Bournemouth in 13th. Chelsea are on 48, Brentford and Everton 46, and Newcastle 42, with seven matches remaining.

Up to seven English clubs could qualify if Liverpool win the Champions League and either Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest take the Europa League without qualifying via their league position. Crystal Palace, who face Fiorentina on Thursday, are among the Europa Conference League favourites and could earn an extra Europa League spot.
