Premier League to trial rule targeting tactical goalkeeper injury time-wasting | OneFootball

With approval from the International Football Association Board, the Premier League and all English competitions will trial a rule to curb stoppages caused by genuine or feigned goalkeeper injuries. L'Équipe reports that the plan is aimed at cutting time-wasting.

In November, after Manchester City's 3-2 win over Leeds, Daniel Farke accused Gianluigi Donnarumma of pretending to be injured to bend the rules and run down the clock. Eight months on, national authorities have moved to test a measure targeting such incidents.

The Football Association, the Premier League, the English Football League, the National League and the Women's Super League have voted to stage the trial at Saturday's Carabao Cup preliminary round tie between Tranmere and Rochdale.

Under the proposal, if the referee summons medical staff to treat a goalkeeper, the coach has 10 seconds to nominate another player to leave the pitch for one minute once play restarts. If no player is selected in time, the captain must go off. If the injured goalkeeper is substituted, the team avoids the sanction.

A similar version will be tested in the Australian league, where the captain would always be the player to depart. If the English trials prove successful, the approach could be adopted worldwide in coming seasons.
