Moukoko joined the BVB youth academy from FC St. Pauli at the age of 11. He helped the U17s win the German Championship in 2018 and to reach the final again in 2019. Across a total of 88 U17 and U19 appearances, he scored 141 goals. In November 2020, at the age of 16 years and one day, he became the youngest-ever Bundesliga player. In December 2020, he became the youngest-ever UEFA Champions League player. In the same month, he became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Bundesliga. After 99 appearances for the first team (18 goals) and a DFB-Pokal winner's medal in 2021, the forward moved to Nice on loan in August 2024. He made 22 appearances for the French top-flight outfit and Europa League participant last season, scoring two goals.

Borussia Dortmund's Managing Director for Sport, Lars Ricken, declared: “For us, Youssoufa is a very special player who has played a key role in winning titles at youth level and has shaped our youth academy over the years with his attitude, which was very professional even at a young age. Following a loan spell that did not bring about the desired success, we wish him a successful fresh start in Copenhagen and a sporting environment that will enable him to take full advantage of his undoubtedly huge potential.”

“Youssoufa played his way into the senior national team thanks to his good performances for the BVB first team. Unfortunately, his development has stalled recently. Everyone involved would certainly have liked it to be different. We have had constructive talks with FC Copenhagen over the past few days and Youssoufa has been actively involved in making this transfer happen. We hope that his career will now take off again. The whole of BVB would be very happy about that,” said sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

“There are two hearts beating in my chest right now. It's not easy to say goodbye to a club like BVB, because this club, my team-mates, coaches, support staff and the brilliant fans will always mean a lot to me,“ said Youssoufa Moukoko, before adding: ”On the other hand, after a difficult year in France, it's time to make a completely fresh start in a new location – with optimism and enormous ambition. FC Copenhagen offers me every opportunity to do that. I would like to thank the entire BVB family; I will always be a fan and I hope to see you again in the UEFA Champions League.”
