“Prepare yourself” — Ferdinand hints Liverpool Legend could step in as Liverpool crisis deepens
Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Steven Gerrard could be called upon to take charge of Liverpool if the club decide to part ways with current manager Arne Slot whose position has come under increasing scrutiny after poor start to the 2025 /26 Premier League campaign.
Slot guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut season but the Reds have regressed sharply this year suffering six defeat in their first 13 league match and slipping to eighth place.
The performances rather than results alone, have intensified the pressure around the Dutchman.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand revealed recent conversation with Gerrard and hinted that the Liverpool icon could be considered as short term solution should the club make managerial change.
Ferdinand said:
“I was sitting with Gerrard few days ago and I told him: ‘You need to sharpen up, my friend. Be ready.. you might come back as interim coach.’ That’s what I was thinking. With all the games coming up, I just don’t see Slot getting through this run in good enough place.”
The former United centre back believes that fan pressure could force Liverpool’s hand if results do not improve quickly.
He added:
“The pressure from the supporters might become too much. And in these situations, clubs often turn to legend. Gerrard is icon at Liverpool and he would step in to help. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Steven Gerrard gets phone call.”
Despite mixed spells with Rangers, Aston Villa & Al Ettifaq, Gerrard’s status at Anfield remains untouched.
His leadership, connection with the fanbase and deep understanding of the club’s culture make him easy option for the board if Slot’s situation deteriorates.
