Ange Postecoglou’s winless start as Nottingham Forest manager continued after a 2-0 defeat at Newcastle United.
Postecoglou was appointed as the club’s head coach last month but has endured a miserable start to his tenure at the City Ground. Forest are winless in seven games across all competitions under the Australian after defeat at St James’ Park on Sunday.
Bruno Guimaraes opened the scoring for Newcastle just before the hour. The Brazilian snapped into a challenge on Morgan Gibbs-White to regain possession, before Dan Burn fed the ball back into the midfielder’s possession.
Guimaraes curled home a brilliant effort to break the deadlock, with Forest complaints over his initial tackle redundant as the goal stood. Newcastle’s opened was a deserved moment for the Magpies, who had bossed proceedings and carved out the clearer opportunities.
A second arrived on 82 minutes, when Nick Woltemade emphatically slammed home from the penalty spot, after former Newcastle midfielder Elliot Anderson’s clumsy challenge on Guimaraes inside the area.
After the high of last season’s European qualification, Forest find themselves 17th after just one win in their opening seven Premier League games. Postecoglou faced ‘sacked in the morning’ chants during the club’s 3-2 defeat to Midtjylland in Europe on Thursday and is under increasing pressure after his wait for a first win at the City Ground continued.
