Prestianni–Vinícius Jr controversy: FIFA brings out the heavy artillery
FIFA is considering an unprecedented tightening of its regulations. In February 2026, its Players’ Voice Panel confirmed it was reviewing a measure to penalize players who deliberately cover their mouths to hide comments made on the pitch. This initiative was sparked by a controversial incident in the Champions League.
To recap, on February 17, 2026, during the playoff between Benfica and Real Madrid, Vinícius Jr. accused Gianluca Prestianni of making racist insults while covering his mouth with his shirt to avoid lip-reading. The case quickly took on international proportions.
Unofficially dubbed the “Prestianni Law,” this proposal reflects the global body’s determination to ramp up the fight against discriminatory behavior and ensure greater transparency on European pitches.
