PREVIEW: Arsenal start title defence against Coventry City

Arsenal will begin their Premier League title defence this evening, as they kick off the top-flight season at home to newly promoted Coventry City.

Both sides won their respective league titles with a game to spare last season, and both marked landmark achievements too. Coventry returned to the Premier League for the first time since the 2000/01 season, whilst the Gunners lifted their first Premier League trophy since their historic 2003/04 invincible season under Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal already have one piece of silverware under their belt this season, having dismantled Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend. Free-flowing counters allowed Mikel Arteta’s side to hit City with devastating breaks throughout the match and ease to a comfortable win. Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring after just 25 seconds, before Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard netted either side of the break.

Coventry have had a busy Summer at the CBS Arena, which has seen Frank Lampard look to strengthen his side ahead of their first Premier League season since 2000/01. The headline signing has arguably been Caleb Yirenkyi, who arrives after an impressive World Cup with Ghana. Taiwo Awoniyi’s recent arrival from Nottingham Forest could also prove pivotal if he can recapture his best form and keep his injury struggles at bay.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 8pm BST this evening, and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
