Birmingham City welcome Swansea City to St Andrew’s this Saturday lunchtime in the Championship, with the game live on Sky Sports at 12:30.
While Birmingham have had a full week on the training ground to prepare, Swansea were in midweek action against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup.
The Swans pulled off an impressive comeback after going two down to Igor Jesus’s first-half brace, turning the tie around with three goals after the break to book their place in the fourth round.
Since their opening-day loss to Middlesbrough, Swansea have put together a seven-game unbeaten run across league and cup, so they’ll head to the Midlands in confident mood. Birmingham, on the other hand, will be desperate to make home advantage count and get their season back on track in front of their own supporters.
George Revell (Blues Focus): After their first three games of the Championship season, many considered Birmingham City‘s start as very good - but back-to-back defeats against Leicester and Stoke brought it right down to average.
Blues have lost their last three matches across competitions not only without scoring a goal, but while only registering one shot on target in over 270 minutes of football.
And that will have sent shockwaves through Chris Davies’ mind. The Blues boss will be well aware that, with 27,000-plus watching on at St. Andrew’s, the onus will be on his side to go out and beat Swansea.
Despite coming back from 2-0 down and scoring two late goals to beat Europa League Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night - and ultimately sitting one point above Blues in the league standings, the Swans have created the second lowest expected goals in the Championship so far, and Blues have recorded the least shots on target out of all 24 teams in the division - so evidence suggests we could be in for a bore-fest on Saturday.
That said, Blues haven’t lost a league match at home since April 2024 - and always seem to be able to muster up a victory in B9 when they most need it.
It won’t be pretty, but with St. Andrew’s behind them, I fancy Blues to pull off a vital 1-0 victory.
Prediction: 1-0
Luke Davies (Swans Cast): Swansea head away to Birmingham on the high of a late comeback victory against Premier League opponents Nottingham Forest, coming from 2-0 down to progress as 3-2 winners in the Carabao Cup. Alan Sheehan will be hoping his squad can use this positivity to boost their chances of a result against a Birmingham side who are fancied by many to be challenging for promotion.
It will be a difficult game for the Swans however. Birmingham have looked good in the most part this season, though have come into some recent difficulty creating opportunities and registering shots on target. Swansea who have been largely solid at the back so far will be hoping this continues going into the weekend. A low scoring game expected from me, and any points returning to Wales will be a positive outcome.
