Eintracht Frankfurt travel to VfL Wolfsburg on Matchday 29. The Wolves are in a perilous position in the table, but the Eagles are only focusing on themselves ahead of what they expect to be a “difficult game”.
The backdrop
After drawing 2-2 at home to 1. FC Köln last time out, Eintracht are back on the road on Matchday 29 as they travel to VfL Wolfsburg in the first of six remaining fixtures in the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. Kick-off on Saturday 11 April is at 15:30 CEST.
Ten places and 18 points separate Frankfurt in seventh from the second-from-bottom Wolves, but Robin Koch is expecting “another difficult game” at the Volkswagen Arena. “Everything’s at stake for teams near the bottom of the table, which means they’re going to give it their all,” added the Eintracht skipper. “They showed in their last game that they’re capable of hurting opponents like [Bayer] Leverkusen.”
Wolfsburg led 3-1 at the BayArena on Matchday 28 before slipping to an eventual 6-3 defeat. Their 17th league loss of the campaign left them four points adrift of the relegation play-off position, and six from outright safety. On top of that, the Wolves have…
Looking back
However, Wolfsburg’s recent record against Eintracht should give them cause for optimism. The Eagles have struggled against the Wolves down the years, with VfL picking up more points against Eintracht than against any other side in the Bundesliga apart from Borussia Mönchengladbach and VfB Stuttgart.
The teams played out a 1-1 draw in the corresponding fixture earlier this season, when Michy Batshuayi’s last-minute penalty earned Frankfurt a share of the spoils after Aaron Zehnter had given Wolfsburg the lead.Hecking at the wheel
Dieter Hecking replaced Daniel Bauer as Wolfsburg head coach on 8 March. The vastly experienced 61-year-old, who has taken charge of 634 Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 games, is embarking one his second spell at the Volkswagen Arena, having previously held the reins between January 2013 and October 2016.
Hecking guided Wolfsburg to DFB Cup glory during that period, but his focus now will be on helping the club to preserve their top-flight status. He’s still looking for his first victory since his return, however, having overseen draws with TSG Hoffenheim and losses to both Bremen and Leverkusen.
‘We need to perform on the pitch’
Statistics aside, Eintracht are intent on registering their 11th league win of the campaign this weekend. “We don’t need to get the calculator out and see what teams above and below us are doing,” said sporting director Timmo Hardung. “We need to focus on ourselves, perform out on the pitch and pick up three points in Wolfsburg.”
