Portsmouth host Wrexham this Wednesday at the Fratton Park for matchweek 14 of the EFL Championship. The match will be broadcast live at 20:00 on Sky Sports Football.
John Mousinho’s side are in search of a much-needed boost after a difficult run of form that has seen them suffer three consecutive league defeats, including a 4-0 loss away to Birmingham City last time out. Sitting 20th in the table with 13 points, Pompey will be eager to deliver a response in front of their home fans.
Wrexham, meanwhile, make the trip to the south coast on the back of a morale-boosting 3-2 victory over Coventry City. Phil Parkinson’s men have climbed to 15th place with 17 points and will be aiming to secure back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Portsmouth edged the last meeting between the two sides 2-0, but with both teams eager to gain momentum, another competitive encounter is expected under the Fratton Park floodlights.
Freddie Webb (Pompey News Now / PO4cast): Everything that could have gone wrong for Pompey did go wrong against Birmingham City. A failed new formation, insipid individual performances, and careless errors left a sour taste in supporters’ mouths following the 4-0 defeat.
The fans expected the Blues to take a step this season, but so far, that clearly isn’t happening. A successful style of play is gone, hampered by injuries and other factors.
Now John Mousinho’s men have to return to Fratton Park to face a Wrexham side which is hard to quantify. They have great individual players, but are lacking an identity. The Blues, with their Championship experience, should be favourites at home. But with the side chopping and changing, and underperforming across the pitch, it doesn’t seem likely.
Prediction: 2-2
Craig Jones: Wrexham return to action on Wednesday evening with our first game against Portsmouth in 39 years.
This comes off the back of a superb and perhaps unexpected win against Championship pacesetters Coventry City on Friday night.
It was a great night for Wrexham fans at The Racecourse and helped forget the disappointment of the Carabao Cup exit a few days prior.
We played really well and Kieffer Moore scored the perfect hat-trick, with each goal set up by Josh Windass.
We'll be looking to continue that level of performance at Fratton Park against a Pompey side who had their worst defeat of the season on the weekend away at Birmingham City.
That was their third loss on the bounce which has understandably led to some concerns amongst their fanbase as they slip down the table.
Wrexham will be hoping that Portsmouth's woes continue, but will still have to play well to get something form this long midweek trip.
Callum Doyle should return to the defence after his three game suspension, in place of Dan Scarr.
We may see a couple of tweaks in midfield and George Dobson could return to the starting line up.
I think Matty James and Ben Sheaf will keep their places though, with James in particular in really good form of late.
After their star showing on Friday, Windass and Moore are likely to be up top together again.
This is one of those games that could go either way, but I'm hopeful that Wrexham have enough in the bag to nick the win.
