The Thomas Tuchel era begins with a sense of anticipation and curiosity as England prepare to face Albania in their opening 2026 World Cup qualifier at Wembley. This fixture marks more than just the start of a campaign—it signals a seismic shift in how the Three Lions may line up, play and perhaps even perceive themselves on the international stage.
Tuchel has wasted no time in stamping his mark. His first England squad was filled with eyebrow-raising selections, none more so than the unexpected recall of Jordan Henderson. It’s a move that suggests Tuchel values leadership, experience, and perhaps a degree of control in midfield.

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s inclusion is a bold statement—one that shows Tuchel is unafraid to trust youth. With Luke Shaw and Lewis Hall sidelined through injury, Lewis-Skelly is a viable candidate for the left-back role. Dan Burn also received a first call-up, though he may have to wait a little longer for his debut.
There’s also a sense of homecoming in Reece James’ return. Having not featured for England in two years, the Chelsea full-back is likely to be reinstated swiftly under the manager with whom he lifted the Champions League.
John Stones’ absence due to injury leaves a gap in central defence. Ezri Konsa is tipped to partner Marc Guehi, as Tuchel explores alternatives to Southgate’s usual combinations. Declan Rice is a nailed-on starter, but the identity of his midfield partner adds intrigue, particularly after Conor Gallagher’s exclusion. Tuchel’s decision to bring back Henderson may hint at his preferred direction.

Cole Palmer, initially named in the squad, has been ruled out with a minor injury. His withdrawal paved the way for Morgan Gibbs-White to be drafted in, though the Nottingham Forest midfielder has not made the 23-man matchday squad. Also omitted are Jarell Quansah and Aaron Ramsdale.

Bukayo Saka’s continued absence due to a hamstring issue simplifies the forward selection puzzle. With Ollie Watkins also injured, Dominic Solanke joins the squad as backup to captain Harry Kane, who will undoubtedly lead the line.
