Propaganda from Celtic as Brendan to blame again | OneFootball

Celtic Interim Chairman Brian Wilson has commented on the club’s poor start to the season while blaming Brendan Rodgers for the state of the club last summer.

Speaking as Celtic announced their annual results, which featured a £4.8m loss for the financial year ending June 2026, compared to a profit of £45.7m before tax last year. Supporters have called for change at the club but these appear to be superficial, with the same structure remaining in place.

Interim Chairman Wilson remarked that the opening stages of the new season had yielded “mixed fortunes” before addressing last season.

“The early stages of the 2026/27 season have brought mixed fortunes. Our league campaign started strongly and the first leg tie in the Champions League qualifier gave cause for optimism. The second leg defeat to LASK was, accordingly, all the more deeply disappointing for every supporter of the Club. This has been followed by our exit from the League Cup.

“We now move into the Europa League as well as pursuing our defence of the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup, with renewed commitment to success.

“The events of the past 12 months have been dramatic, sometimes joyful and at other points deeply frustrating. The departure of Brendan Rodgers was an unanticipated event which initiated a period of instability. In other circumstances, the appointment of Wilfried Nancy might have worked but his arrival in mid-season and the changes which followed clearly did not. Parting ways with Wilfried was hugely disappointing but decisive action had to be taken.

“The return of the great Martin O’Neill, supported by his backroom team as well as a fine squad of players, then proved to be a triumphant success. It is also worth noting that eight of our players were selected by their countries for the World Cup finals.“

The comments about Brendan Rodgers shrieks of amateur planning from the club. The Irishman clearly sought assurances from the club in the transfer window the previous January and with Kyogo not replaced, it is unlikely he was pleased before the shambles of a summer window last year. It should have been something that the club prepared for, much like transfers. Regrettably, Celtic refuse to learn their lessons and are found, again, to be reactive.

Rodgers did not respond after the Celtic website was hijacked by major shareholder Dermot Desmond to launch a personal attack against the ex-Liverpool manager. Supporters can see that it was not Rodgers’ fault, especially given he was the last Celtic manager to navigate European qualifiers to reach the UCL.

There is certainly an argument that Nancy could have worked out had he joined in the close season; however, it is offered up by the Board as if this was an unfortunate situation. The reality was that they could have kept MON in the job until the summer and then appointed the Frenchman. Instead, they made a mess of the situation, which was of their making.

There is a real danger of apathy creeping in, which will only end poorly for the team. Supporters wish to be engaged and treated like adults. The club spoke about a plan in the summer in their meeting with Irish supporters and most will give them the chance to mend fences. Although, it is the same as last season and there requires to be significant changes.
