Public prosecutors have requested the conviction of Luís Filipe Vieira, the former Benfica president, with a fine sought in the defamation case brought by journalist João Malheiro.
Record writes that, in a CMTV interview in June 2022, Vieira said Flora, Eusébio’s widow, asked that Malheiro be kept away from the coffin during funeral preparations, a version she confirmed in court.
He also alleged Malheiro was aware of Eusébio’s dependence on whisky and still encouraged it. Malheiro is claiming around 100,000 euros in compensation. Vieira has another case adjourned.
On fourteen April, prosecutor Pedro Vieira Casquinha said witness testimony proved the existence of a defamation offence. A lawyer also criticised Vieira for harming Malheiro’s reputation.
Judge Pedro Grade is due to deliver the verdict on eight May at the Loures court, where the trial has been running since nineteen January.
