The exit of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain to Manchester City has now been detailed by one of the French giants’ advisors this week.

The 26-year-old made a high-profile switch to the Etihad Stadium during the final days of the summer transfer window, ending a four-year stay in Paris and following months of speculation over his future at the Parc des Princes with interest emerging from across Europe.

Having won numerous honours including Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League during his spell in the French capital, Donnarumma’s departure came as a surprise to many, particularly given his status as first-choice goalkeeper last season.

Yet a contract stand-off with club officials and Manchester City’s own ambition to sign the player, coupled with long-standing admiration for the Italian international, proved decisive in securing the deal.

While reports at the time highlighted City’s pursuit of a new long-term No.1 after Ederson’s exit, little was known about PSG’s stance on the matter. Now, new comments have shed light on why the French club were willing to sanction the transfer.

Speaking this week in an interview with French newspaper RMC Sport, Paris Saint-Germain advisor Luis Campos has claimed that Gianluigi Donnarumma’s salary demands were the real reason behind his exit that ultimately led to City.

“Donnarumma was one of the first players we approached about renewing his contract,” Campos said, as translated and relayed by MailSport.

Campos continued, “But we quickly realised it would be difficult due to his demands, and the club is more important than any one player.

“Things have changed at PSG, and Donna asked for a salary at the level of the old PSG, not the current one.”

For City, Donnarumma’s arrival represents both a financial and footballing commitment to the next stage of Pep Guardiola’s squad evolution. The club views him as a ready-made world-class option capable of delivering consistency in both the Premier League and Europe.

Meanwhile, PSG’s stricter financial approach reflects a significant shift away from the extravagant contracts that previously defined the club’s era of superstar signings such as Neymar and Lionel Messi in particular.

Looking ahead, it will be intriguing to see how Gianluigi Donnarumma adapts to Pep Guardiola’s philosophy, particularly in comparison to Ederson, although his blockbuster showing featuring a world class stop to deny Bryan Mbeumo in the Manchester derby was deemed as the perfect start to life in the north-west of England.
