Ferran Torres is set to become a Paris Saint-Germain player in the coming hours, bringing an end to his successful spell at Barcelona.

The Spain international has agreed personal terms with the French champions, and the two clubs have reached an agreement worth €50 million plus €5 million in add-ons.

The deal is now so advanced that Ferran did not train with Barcelona on Wednesday, having been granted permission to finalise his move to Paris.

Luis Enrique’s plan for Ferran

According to SPORT, Luis Enrique has reserved an important role for Ferran, a player he knows well from their time together with the Spanish national team.

The key to that role lies in Ferran’s versatility. He is not a traditional number nine, but for Luis Enrique, that is a strength rather than a weakness.

His ability to drift across the attacking line and find pockets of space is precisely the profile the coach covets, and it is exactly what convinced him to bring the Spaniard to Paris.

The clearest evidence of that thinking is the departure of Goncalo Ramos to AC Milan. The Portuguese fits the classic centre-forward archetype but struggled for impact last season, failing to start a single match across 17 Champions League appearances.

Luis Enrique’s heavy rotation, particularly in Ligue 1, should also guarantee Ferran plenty of minutes. The Asturian frequently rotates his squad, and Ferran could seize that opportunity to force his way into the side for the biggest matches.

While PSG’s attacking trio of Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia appears settled, Luis Enrique is understood to be considering moving Doue into a more central position this season.

Should that system take shape, it could open up a spot on the wing for Ferran to make his own.

A gradual introduction

For now, Ferran will need time to reach full fitness, having been on holiday, and PSG have no more pre-season friendlies to ease him in.

The date circled is August 23, the opening day of Ligue 1 against Stade Rennais, by which point Ferran should have over a week of training behind him and could feature for at least a few minutes as he begins his new chapter in Paris.

As for Barcelona, the club remain in contention to sign Julian Alvarez, though that possibility is waning with each passing second.
