PSG v Bayern semi-final is also a battle of institutions | OneFootball

The Champions League semi-final between PSG and Bayern at Parc des Princes on Tuesday at 21:00 is also a contest of institutions. L'Équipe notes PSG have tightened their structure, capped by last May’s triumph, as Bayern’s once-model system has wobbled.

Upheaval after Julian Nagelsmann’s exit in spring 2023 and the Tuchel interlude left a less linear picture, while Uli Hoeness kept sway. On the Bavarian government’s podcast, he said he wants Manuel Neuer’s June-expiring deal extended.

Inside Bayern, a cleaner process has taken shape. Max Eberl and Christoph Freund now work in tandem, and Vincent Kompany’s appointment in May 2024 is credited with restoring stability.

In Paris, Luis Enrique has overhauled the first-team set-up since 2023 with the backing of owners, prioritising the collective and keeping final approval. Club figures credit him for a clear identity, Luis Campos for recruitment and Nasser al-Khelaïfi for trust.

That order followed a break from the star-led era. In his first season, with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé still around, Messi received a two-week suspension for an unauthorised Saudi Arabia trip before apologising online.

Bayern have also tightened discipline. Michael Olise was fined about €12,000 in January for arriving six minutes late, and before the last international break rules on punctuality were reinforced, since when no player has been late to training or video sessions.

The lingering question for PSG is whether this framework outlasts Luis Enrique. Talks over extending him to 2030 appear to postpone that debate.
