Liverpool visit Paris Saint-Germain for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with the pressure continuing to ramp up on head coach Arne Slot. The Reds’ comprehensive defeat away to Manchester City in the FA Cup means Europe is now their only route to silverware in a difficult season.

While the imminent return of Alexander Isak from a leg fracture will lift spirits, Liverpool are not favoured to progress past PSG, the reigning champions who edged Slot’s side in a thrilling round-of-16 clash last season.

Luis Enrique’s hosts remain without Bradley Barcola owing to injury but offered a reminder of their attacking depth by hammering Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate in the previous round, and this remains the toughest of away trips.

Liverpool’s pride, as well as their season, is on the line after their humiliation at the Etihad and they will certainly need more “fighting spirit” if they are to keep alive their hopes of salvaging a difficult campaign with silverware.

Florian Wirtz: Liverpool dressing room still believes in Arne Slot

Florian Wirtz has insisted the Liverpool team still believe in head coach Arne Slot.

Liverpool have lost 15 games in all competitions, are 21 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal and crashed out of the FA Cup 4-0 to Manchester City on Saturday when captain Virgil van Dijk admitted he thought the side gave up.

But Wirtz feels they are still playing for Slot and said his achievement in winning the Premier League last year and a series of major matches in the current campaign proves they ought to have confidence in him.

“Yes, of course we are believing in the manager,” said the £100m signing. “The team should believe in the manager because they won the league last season. We had a lot of good games this season and we wanted it to be better.

“We still have things to play for and everything I can see is we believe in the manager.”

Liverpool's season on the line?

Amid the alarming nature of their performance and some eye-catching quotes in the post-match debrief, the reality of Liverpool’s humiliation at the hands of Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday was that hopes of winning a trophy this season are now done to the Champions League.

Mohamed Salah will be desperate to sign off his Liverpool career with a fourth Champions League final but a dream Budapest send-off would appear to be unlikely based on current form. If Liverpool do somehow get past PSG in the quarter-finals they would face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the semi-finals.
