PSG vs Aston Villa player ratings: Doué shines as PSG retain Super Cup  | OneFootball

Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg, edging past a battling Aston Villa side 2-1.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s early strike and a contentious late Désiré Doué winner, awarded on VAR review, proved enough to see off a Villa team that pushed the European champions all the way.

Here is how we rated the players in Austria

PSG player ratings

Matvey Safonov – 6. Kept out a stinging effort from George Hemmings when the score was still level and had no chance with Madjo’s finish.

Achraf Hakimi – 6. Solid down the right without his usual attacking spark, and lucky not to concede a penalty for a clip on Hemmings.

Marquinhos – 6. Organised the backline calmly but had a difficult evening dealing with Villa’s physical front players.

Willian Pacho – 5.  Bundled aside by Madjo for Villa’s equaliser, but was immaculate on the ball, completing all 70 of his passes.

Nuno Mendes – 6. Solid defensively and involved in the build-up to the opener, though a wasted cutback let Villa off the hook in the first half.

João Neves – 6. Tidy in possession without dominating the midfield battle, withdrawn as PSG shored things up late on.

Vitinha – 7. Controlled tempo well through the middle and helped PSG dictate long spells of the game.

Warren Zaïre-Emery – 7. His early effort set up the rebound for Kvaratskhelia’s opener, and he produced a superb late block to deny João Gomes a leveller.

Maghnes Akliouche – 6. A composed full debut in the front three before making way for Dembélé at the interval as planned.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – 8. Direct and dangerous throughout, scoring the opener from a loose ball and nearly teeing up a second soon after.

Désiré Doué – 9 (player of the match). Scored the eventual winner, finishing off Dembélé’s pass after a lengthy VAR check, and left to a standing ovation late on.

Substitutes

Ousmane Dembélé –  7 changed the game at half-time, setting up Doué’s winner.

Lucas Hernández and Fabián Ruiz added control late on. Senny Mayulu and Lucas Beraldo saw out the closing stages.

Aston Villa player ratings

Marco Bizot – 6. A strong save from a deflected effort in the first half, beaten only by two moments of real quality.

Matty Cash – 6. Got the better of Nuno Mendes early on but was undone when Kvaratskhelia switched flanks and created space for the opener.

Victor Lindelöf – 6. Assured alongside Pau Torres, defending calmly whenever called upon.

Pau Torres – 6. Villa’s most composed passer in the opening spell, before a harsh-looking second-half booking and a late substitution.

Ian Maatsen – 6. Bright at left-back early, including a smart tackle on Hakimi, though careless in possession soon after Villa fell behind.

Boubacar Kamara – 6. Assured on his first competitive outing since February, defensively sound and unlucky not to open the scoring himself from distance.

João Gomes – 6. A tidy full debut built mainly around holding shape, capped by a big late chance well blocked by Zaïre-Emery.

John McGinn – 7. Relentless against difficult opposition, setting up Madjo’s leveller before being booked as he was substituted.

Emi Buendía – 7. Full of energy off the ball and a threat in transition, including the pass that almost put Hemmings through for a second equaliser.

George Hemmings – 8. Villa’s most dangerous attacker, causing problems from both flanks and unfortunate not to win a penalty when clipped by Hakimi.

Brian Madjo – 7. Composed and physical throughout a landmark debut, hitting the post before finally converting a first-time volley to become the Super Cup’s youngest scorer.

Substitutes

Tammy Abraham (6) added a focal point up front late on. Lamare Bogarde (7) made a string of important defensive interventions after coming on. Alysson (6) almost created a second equaliser on his European debut. Tyrone Mings and Ross Barkley came on too late to be rated.
