According to L'Équipe, Mikel Arteta was on Paris Saint-Germain's shortlist in spring 2023 to replace Christophe Galtier, though the club later denied courting him and said it had always wanted Luis Enrique. PSG ultimately chose the former Spain coach.
Arteta's ties to PSG run deep. In January 2001, the 18-year-old left Barcelona's La Masia, blocked by midfield competition including Pep Guardiola, Xavi and Luis Enrique, after coach Luis Fernandez moved to bring him to Paris on loan.
Across an 18-month spell he made about 50 appearances in all competitions and debuted in the Champions League. He retained affection for Paris, even though PSG could not afford a permanent deal at the end.
Two decades on, PSG's hierarchy narrowed a shortlist for the owner in Doha after weeks of searching, and Arteta's name featured. His profile suited a less starry project built around youth and a defined, attractive style.
The idea also echoed the 2020 appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, handing the job to a former player. Hiring a Pep Guardiola disciple would have nudged the owners towards a long-held but unmet ambition to land the Catalan.
The Arteta route did not advance beyond informal contacts. He indicated he had no intention of leaving Arsenal, where he had committed in late 2019, endured eighth-place finishes in 2020 and 2021, then finished second in 2023.
PSG moved instead for Luis Enrique, who shares many principles but brings greater experience. So far, they have had little cause to regret that decision.
