On Sunday evening, during the Trophée des Champions lost to RC Lens (1-0), Nuno Mendes was shown a red card for an improper challenge on an opponent. According to RMC Sport, Paris Saint-Germain were surprised when they read the referee’s report on the sending-off of the 24-year-old PSG left-back.

According to several sources, PSG were surprised by how harshly the match referee described the incident in this document. It states that, for the red card he received, Nuno Mendes committed “a violent blow off the ball.” At PSG, it is noted that play had already resumed while the Portuguese defender was making a run forward. Paris are not disputing the red card in any way, but the European champions see the referee’s report as damning against the Portuguese player.”

That may not seem like much, since Nuno Mendes was sent off anyway. That will not change, just like PSG’s defeat in that match. However, the referee’s report is far from unimportant. The words chosen carry significant weight. It will be taken into account by the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s disciplinary committee in order to determine the appropriate suspension. There are set guidelines for the different offences. Paris will possibly try to defend their player in order to avoid extra matches being added to the automatic one-match suspension for the next game, this Sunday against Rennes on the opening matchday of Ligue 1.
