The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed the dates and venues for the highly anticipated MTN8 semi-finals that pitted defending champions Orlando Pirates against Mamelodi Sundowns, while Stellenbosch FC tackle Sekhukhune United.
The Buccaneers secured passage to the next round of the competition with a commanding 2-0 victory over Polokwane City at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, courtesy of goals from new signing Oswin Appollis and Patrick Maswanganyi.
Meanwhile, Masandawana thumped Richards Bay 4-0 to progress to the semi-finals of the tournament, with a brace from deadly frontman Iqraam Rayners, a Simphiwe Mcineka own goal and a stunner from youngster Siyabonga Mabena.
The two South African giants last squared off in this stage of the competition in 2022, where Pirates claimed a 3-0 aggregate win across two legs, as they went all the way to win the competition in Jose Riveiro’s first season in charge.
Pirates head into the titanic clash looking to defend their crown, having won the MTN8 for three consecutive seasons under Riveiro. The Sea Robbers became the first club in PSL era to three peat the competition.
New Bucs mentor Abdeslam Ouaddou will be keen to retain the title as they are set to host Miguel Cardoso’s side at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, 16 August. The kickoff is scheduled for 15h00 in what will be a blockbuster encounter.
In the other semi-final, last season’s losing finalists Stellenbosch FC will welcome Sekhukhune United at the Danie Craven Stadium on the same day, with the match set to commence at 18h00 in the mother city.
Stellies claimed a 3-2 victory over AmaZulu after extra time in the quarter-final, as Babina Noko also booked their spot with a similar scoreline against TS Galaxy. While the Limpopo club is yet to lift a trophy in the topflight, Steve Barker’s men have won the Carling Knockout Cup in 2023.
