PSV continued their incredible start to the Eredivisie season on Sunday, claiming their 10th win from 10 matches against Ajax. The league leaders have extended their gap at the top of the table, and Peter Bosz’s side certainly deserved it with their scintillating performance against a rotting Ajax side. At this rate, Ajax really could end up suffering relegation to the Dutch second tier. They’re off to their worst-ever start to a league season, and this defeat makes it five defeats from their opening eight matches. The club are in desperate need of a saviour following the sacking of Maurice Steijn last week.

Surprisingly, Ajax got off to a fast start at the Philips Stadion. Branco van den Boomen opened the scoring, striking from 25 yards out within the first ten minutes. The lead didn’t last long though, as Hirving Lozano managed to curl the ball into the bottom left corner just ten minutes later. After the half-hour mark, referee Danny Makkelie was promptly instructed to suspend the game following a medical incident that had occurred involving a PSV supporter. Fortunately, medical staff were quick to the scene and the fan was resuscitated and regained consciousness.

Just before half-time, it was Brian Brobbey who gave Ajax a shock lead. Having already missed numerous chances, the striker was clearly relieved to have managed to get his name onto the score sheet. After the interval, it was Luuk de Jong who brought the game level for the hosts. The former Newcastle and Barcelona striker is still going strong. This was his eighth goal of the Eredivisie season in just ten matches. He’s now the first player ever to score a goal in six Eredivisie games against Ajax in a row, surpassing the previous record set by Spitz Kohn and Dirk Kuyt.

Substitute Ismael Saibari gave PSV the lead. Brilliant footwork from the Moroccan midfielder led to him rounding Diant Ramaj in the Ajax goal before sweeping the ball into the back of an empty net. Back to you, Hirving Lozano. Just over five minutes later the Mexican machine scored his second, tapping in from Johan Bakayoko’s cross. In the 72nd minute, Lozano completed his hat-trick. A nerve racking VAR check for handball followed, but the goal was given, to Lozano’s relief.

PSV are flying high at the top of the Eredivisie table. An incredible start to the season for Peter Bosz and his unbeatable PSV squad. As for Ajax, they’re decaying at the very bottom of the table. Interim manager Hedwiges Maduro is expected to be replaced in the coming week, but they’re in desperate need of help. For the first time in their history, Ajax have lost five Eredivisie games in a row.
