PSV hoping to get Champions League campaign going against stuttering Bayer Leverkusen

PSV will be in Germany on Wednesday night hoping to put their opening day Champions League defeat to Union St Gilloise behind them. They will be in the industrial region of Germany to face a Bayer Leverkusen side that have already made a managerial change this season. Peter Bosz will be hoping to take advantage of his former side to really kick start PSV’s European campaign.

The home side began their campaign with a 2-2 draw away to Copenhagen. Three goals were scored late on with a Pantelis Hatzidiakos own goal rescuing a point for the Bundesliga side. Alongside that result, Leverkusen are unbeaten in their last five matches, although three of those have been draws. They did manage to grab their second Bundesliga victory of the season with a 2-1 win over St Pauli last weekend, a result that saw them move up to sixth in the table. However, Kasper Hjulmand’s side look a far cry from the one that won the Bundesliga two seasons ago under Xabi Alonso. PSV will have to look out for Patrik Schick, who has three goals and an assist to start this season. Former PSV man Malik Tilman will also want to impress, with the American having two goals in five games already this campaign.

PSV have had a strange start to the campaign. They looked good to star the season with three convincing wins in their opening Eredivisie games, before a shock defeat to Telstar at home. They have only lost that game and the game against Union St Gilloise this season. Last weekend they managed a 2-1 win against newly promoted Excelsior. PSV will certainly miss Ruben van Bommel on Wednesday evening. The 21-year-old has been a great signing from AZ Alkmaar with four goals in eight games but will miss the clash with Leverkusen due to injury.

With Napoli up next in the Champions League, PSV will really want to get something out of the clash with Leverkusen. Next up for the Bundesliga side is PSG at home, so like PSV, they will be eyeing this clash as one they must win.
