Stephen Warnock has criticised Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah for his performance in the final of the Carabao Cup.

Arne Slot squandered his first chance of winning a major trophy with Liverpool in his first season in charge of the Anfield club.

Liverpool, who could bid £25.3million for Genoa star Morten Frendrup, took on Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium in the final of the Carabao Cup on Sunday.

The Reds lost the final 2-1, with Egyptian forward Salah struggling to make an impact.

The £34 million (BBC Sport) forward started on the right of a three-man attacking midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Salah played for the entire 90 minutes, but the former Chelsea attacker could not trouble the Newcastle defence.

The forward was largely anonymous against the Magpies, just like he was quiet against Paris Saint-Germain over two legs in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

Against Newcastle, Salah was rarely involved in Liverpool’s attacks and failed to do much of note when he was in possession.

Former Liverpool player Warnock was following the match, and he was not impressed at all with Salah.

Warnock said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Mo Salah has been poor – he has struggled in the game. He has not turned up at all today.”

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville was on co-commentary duty for the match on Sky Sports, and he noted how quite Salah was.

Neville noted, as quoted on BBC Sport: “I’ve never seen Mo Salah as quiet as I have seen him in this game. He has had three touches, 25 minutes into this second half.

View: Liverpool should hand Mohamed Salah a new contract

Salah has failed to turn up on Liverpool’s big games in recent days, but that should not detract from the legend that he is for the club.

The Egyptian may be 32 now, but he is at the top of his game and is still going strong.

Salah has scored 27 goals and given 17 assists in 29 Premier League games so far this season.

The Liverpool star has been arguably the best player in the Premier League so far this season.

Salah is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season, and the Anfield chiefs have to hand him a new deal even though he struggled against PSG and Newcastle.
