Wouter Goes should be challenged about his behaviour on the field, according to analysts Kenneth Perez, Kees Kwakman and Karim El Ahmadi. The trio were once again annoyed by the antics of the 20-year-old AZ defender during the cup final against Go Ahead Eagles.

“Goes today… Way too far with all that fuss of his”, Perez fumed on ESPN after the cup final. “He’s really too preoccupied with that.” Kwakman also expressed his disapproval. “He really needs help. Seriously. People around him need to tell him: you need to stop for a moment and focus on why you’re on the field.” Kwakman acknowledges that winning matches is very important. “But also focus on your teammates and your football. It’s just slapstick.”

The fact that Goes tried to distract the Go Ahead Eagles players during the penalty shootout with trash talk really upset the former pro. “You could see the limit there, but referees really need to act sooner. I think Goes has nine yellow cards this season, seven of which for pinching or something like that.”

Victor Edvardsen outlined what Goes was doing during the penalty shootout and throughout the wider game:

‘Balance between Atlético and wanting to be yourself…’

Perez chimed in again. “He’s quite young, and this shouldn’t take on a life of its own, because now there’s a lot of attention on him. But he’s making a mess of things at the moment with his behaviour. Today again. I think very highly of him, but he shouldn’t go too far. There’s a balance between wanting to be Atlético Madrid and wanting to be yourself.”

Karim El Ahmadi also agreed. “Atlético players do it every now and then in a match, but he is busy with that kind of thing for ninety minutes. Even when he has the ball.”

Goes must find ‘a mode’ in which he does not need such actions, Perez believes. “Tomorrow, preferably. Otherwise, I don’t see it happening. He has to realise that.” AZ also plays a role in that, Kwakman concludes. “That’s what I mean. They could also sit down with him there.”
