QPR have been backed to complete an 'excellent' deal to sign Wigan Athletic's £2m star man this summer...

Wigan Athletic's Sam Tickle has been one of the EFL's brightest young goalkeepers for many years now, which is why QPR and other Championship sides are keen on his services.

Sam Tickle has played 138 games in League One in three seasons, conceding 156 in that time and has kept 46 clean sheets as well. His one and only Championship appearance for Wigan Athletic came in 2022/23 and he picked up a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Rotherham United on the final day of that season.

QPR are now keen on signing Tickle from Wigan and journalist Alan Nixon reports that between £1.5 million and £2 million could be enough to strike a deal with the Latics in the summer transfer window.

Wigan finished 16th last season, which is why Tickle has to be kicking on and playing at a higher level. QPR have had serious problems in goal this season, with Ben Hamer making seven appearances while Paul Nardi and Joe Walsh having shared the rest of the games and performed poorly.

The QPR verdict on Wigan Athletic's Sam Tickle

We asked FLW's QPR fan pundit Louis Moir about QPR reportedly leading the race to sign Tickle for £2 million or less. We asked if this would be a seriously exciting addition and if he could be the man to finally sort the goalkeeping issues at Loftus Road if a deal can be completed.

He responded: "I think signing Sam Tickle would be an excellent piece of business. A lot of clubs in the Championship would love to have him as their number-one goalkeeper.

"It seems, with how well he's been doing despite being so young, that he's probably deserved the Championship move. It looks like it's going to happen this summer.

"I think any 'keeper we are linked with will be 10 times better than Joe Walsh and what we've had to deal with last season. Obviously, we know it's a massive area we need to fix. If we get a good, solid goalkeeper in, I think it'll be more of a difference than what people think.

"He's done really well at Wigan. The rumours coming out about how much he'd cost aren't too bad at all, either.

"And I think he's probably the best 'keeper in League One. I like what we are doing with the sort of business and signings we have made previously. With Richard Kone and Kwame Poku, we're signing some of the best players in League One.

"Last season, not so much Poku, but Kone does well and you know they're going to improve for the second season in the Championship.

"If we manage to get the best 'keeper from League One, it shows that we're really capable of signing these players that many clubs will be looking at."

Sam Tickle preferred to Ivan Nevistic at QPR

Having been linked with other goalkeepers this summer, Louis explained his preference for Tickle to join QPR. He added: "If a deal can get completed for him, or even with the other we've been linked with Ivan Nevistic, it's great.

"You'd probably maybe favour Sam Tickle. You know, obviously, more experienced in the EFL and all that, but he also looks a top 'keeper.

"He looks like he's not bad with his feet as well, which we all know is a massive part of the game nowadays. Maybe the club feel they need someone more comfortable in that respect as well.

"You know, in terms of building out from the back. Overall, he's obviously a much more solid option than Joe Walsh, so yeah, I'd be absolutely delighted with this signing.

"If we were to beat others, because you know a lot of other clubs will be after Sam Tickle, then it would be brilliant."
