QPR have rejected a proposal from French side Saint-Etienne for midfielder Jonathan Varane, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.

The Championship side paid £1m to Spanish outfit Sporting Gijon to secure the signature of Varane and he has been regular for them since his arrival.

Varane started 29 of the 36 Championship games he featured in for QPR last season and made three goal contributions.

This summer the 24-year-old defensive midfielder has gathered interest from France, with Saint-Etienne keen to secure his signature.

The Ligue 2 outfit have a long-time interest in the QPR star and they also approached Julien Stephan’s side during the winter transfer window, but failed with their move.

Early in July, Saint-Etienne again reignited their pursuit of Varane, but they saw QPR promptly reject their first offer.

However, Saint-Etienne were determined in their hunt to land the 24-year-old midfielder and in the recent days went in with a renewed bid only to see that knocked back by a QPR side resolved to keep Varane at the club.

QPR appear unwilling to play ball with the French club at their current valuation of Varane, with the Hoops not eager to cash in.

Last summer, Varane signed a new deal to extend his stay at Loftus Road until 2030 and so far he has made 80 outings for QPR.

QPR boss Stephan is keen on improving his midfield this summer and they signed former Leeds United star Glen Kamara on loan from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes.

They also brought in experienced Championship defender Dennis Cirkin, who was an option for QPR’s fellow Championship outfit Burnley, on a free transfer from Sunderland.

QPR could see departures in the forward department before the end of the window, as there is doubt over Rayan Kolli’s future at Loftus Road.
