Five Eintracht players have reached the last eight of the European Under-21 Championship with a game to spare, while Paxten Aaronson also had cause for celebration on Sunday.
After two group games, Germany have already rubber-stamped their place in the quarter-finals of the European Under-21 Championship. Having beaten Slovenia 3-0 in their opening match, the team featuring Eintracht quartet Elias Baum, Nathaniel Brown, Nnamdi Collins and Ansgar Knauff secured a 4-2 victory over Czech Republic to continue their winning start to the tournament in Slovakia. Germany scored four times in 24 minutes either side of half-time, with 21-year-old defender Collins setting up Nicolò Tresoldi’s 34th-minute opener – his first direct goal involvement on his fifth appearance for the U21s.
As in the first game against Slovenia, Collins and Brown – who celebrates his 22nd birthday on Monday – both started against the Czechs, while Knauff was brought on in the second half. Germany will be looking to clinch top spot in Group B when they take on England in their final group game in Nitra at 21:00 CEST on Wednesday.
Denmark have also clinched their place in the last eight with a game to spare after taking maximum points from their two group matches so far. The Danes lead the way in Group D after beating Netherlands 2-1 in Prešov, with Eagles midfielder Oscar Højlund an unused substitute. Denmark face Scandinavian rivals Finland in their final group game.
USA and Aaronson cruise to victory
While the European Under-21 Championship is already well under way, the Gold Cup has only just kicked off in the USA and Canada. Paxten Aaronson enjoyed a dream start with the Stars and Stripes on Sunday, coming on in the 83rd minute as they beat Trinidad and Tobago 5-0. Aaronson’s brother, Brenden, netted USA’s fourth at PayPal Park in San José. Mauricio Pochettino’s team return to action on Thursday evening local time (Friday morning CEST) against Saudi Arabia in Austin, Texas.
