Quique Setién has cast doubt on José Mourinho’s near return to Real Madrid, criticising the style of the Portuguese’s teams. Speaking to El Programa de Ortega, the former Barcelona coach said Mourinho’s sides have never impressed him.
“Mourinho’s teams have never really caught my eye for the way they play,” he said. Asked if he welcomed the Portuguese’s return to LaLiga, he replied: “No, not really.”
“He has had good results in many places, but I do not focus only on results,” Setién added. “I miss a more attractive footballing proposal.”
With Mourinho described as practically set for Madrid, it undercuts his recent claim at Amoreira that there was a 99% chance he would stay at Benfica. He is expected to sign a deal to 2028, with a further one-year option.
The coach is due in the Spanish capital later this week, after the final La Liga round, when Real Madrid host Athletic Bilbao on Saturday 23 May.
With Benfica’s squad already on holiday, president Rui Costa’s hierarchy are moving to choose Mourinho’s successor. Marco Silva is currently the leading name under consideration.
