In the past few hours, Real Madrid has released a statement on the Chinese social network Weibo, sharing an apology from their defender Dean Huijsen. This comes in the wake of the uproar sparked by his Instagram repost of content considered racist towards people of Asian descent, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

Recently, Dean Huijsen had reshared an image accompanied by offensive remarks about the shape of Asians’ eyes, before deleting the post. The player stated: “I sincerely apologize to my Chinese friends. I previously shared content containing offensive messages without any intention to hurt. It was completely unintentional and I regret the discomfort it caused.”

This statement on Weibo—a platform widely used in China—has drawn criticism from Chinese netizens, who argue that a written apology is not enough and are demanding a public statement on international social networks or a video message. Real Madrid is no stranger to controversy with the Chinese community: back in 2024, a similar incident erupted after a song deemed insulting was played by a supporter before the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.
