Bristol City boss Gerhard Struber has given an immensely encouraging fitness update on Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek.
Vitek has enjoyed a fantastic loan spell at Bristol City since joining the club during the summer transfer window from United.
He has turned out 21 times in the Championship for the side, keeping a clean sheet in a third of his appearances. Vitek joined the Robins to offset the absence of Max O’Leary, who had sustained an injury. The Carrington academy graduate soon made the position his own, keeping it long after O’Leary’s return.
The Czech Republic U20 international sat down with Sky Sports in November and declared he would “love” to challenge Senne Lammens for a starting berth at United.
Vitek has missed City’s last four games with an injury picked up in training midway through last month. With Vitek sidelined, O’Leary has returned to the team.
In a statement released two weeks ago, City confirmed that Vitek had undergone a small procedure on his knee.
The club hinted that the issue was not as serious as initially feared, noting that they were expecting Vitek to be back in February.
Now, Struber has strongly suggested that Vitek could return even sooner than that.
Ahead of City’s Sunday meeting with Preston North End, Struber was asked about Vitek’s condition. He answered [as quoted by Bristol Live], “Looks really good.”
“Really, really, really good, so I would say he jumps back super soon.”
Struber added, “[The] FA Cup is maybe a little bit too early, but we will see.”
Following their match against Preston, City turn their attention to the FA Cup, hosting Watford at Ashton Gate next weekend.
Vitek will certainly be pushing to be fit and available for that contest despite Struber’s claim that it may be too soon for him.
