"Valencia is going to have the most modern stadium for that World Cup, with 70,044 spectators," said RFEF president Rafael Louzán, speaking to El Larguero.
The new Valencia ground is not among the 11 venues named by FIFA for the World Cup in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Indications are that the list will change and Nou Mestalla could stage matches.
FIFA commissioners are set to visit the different venues in the coming weeks to inspect construction progress. Some of those stadiums will not make the cut, at which point Nou Mestalla would be fully in contention.
The only condition from FIFA is that the project is completed by December 2028. If work goes to plan, Valencia could start the 27-28 season there and comfortably meet the requirements.
Louzán also addressed why the stadium was initially left out, saying it was excluded "because there were problems between the ownership and the city council. They have been solved."
