Elche visit Villarreal on Sunday eight March at 14.00, Estadio de la Cerámica, with the build-up dominated by fallout around Rafa Mir after the 2-2 draw with Espanyol. Off-field noise frames a demanding derby.

The issue erupted in the second half when Omar El Hilali told the referee he had heard a racist comment attributed to Rafa Mir, triggering the anti-racism protocol and a brief stoppage. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the report logged the complaint but noted no official heard it.

The case now sits with the Competition Committee, which will decide whether to open proceedings, while LaLiga reviews footage. Debate over possible bans has grown because, if deemed a very serious racism offence, the RFEF code provides for severe punishment.

The rule covers statements, gestures or insults that humiliate on grounds such as race or religion and, for licence holders, sets suspension or loss of licence for two to five years plus fines. That does not apply automatically, facts must be proven and the disciplinary framing defined.

Elche have condemned racism while urging caution amid what they call a lack of evidence as inquiries continue. Parts of the crowd’s reaction during the protocol have drawn criticism. On the pitch, Villarreal’s tempo at home will demand focus and calm.
