Rafa Nadal has distanced himself from suggestions he could feature in a Real Madrid presidential bid, moving quickly to end speculation.

After reports earlier this week connected him to possible electoral moves at the Bernabéu, the player said in a post that claims of his involvement were not true.

His clarification came ahead of an expected appearance on Thursday at the reopening of his museum at the Rafa Nadal Academy, where his camp had initially planned to respond.

Nadal, a recognised Madridista and the club’s honorary member since 2011, had been linked to the orbit of businessman Enrique Riquelme, founder and president of Cox, floated again as a potential alternative to Florentino Pérez.

Nadal and Riquelme have a professional relationship through sponsorships, including the Rafa Nadal Academy Team by Cox in the Hexagon Cup and the Team Rafa project in the world championship for electric powerboats.

By separating those commercial ties from any electoral reading, Nadal has for now cooled the prospect of taking part in, backing, or lending symbolic support to an alternative candidacy.
