Rafael Leao said he felt immense pride after taking Cristiano Ronaldo's number seven for Portugal, wearing it as the team beat Denmark 4-2 in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday.
According to Goal.com, the Galatasaray forward usually wears 17 for his country, but the shirt became available after Ronaldo left the national team camp and he stepped in for the Denmark clash.
"Wearing the number seven was something special for me, because Cristiano has been my idol since I was a child," said Leao after the win. He added that his children were also born on the seventh, so he was delighted.
The weight of Portugal's number seven is considerable and Leao recognised the responsibility that came with it. "I did my best to respect this number, this shirt," he said.
With Ronaldo having left this international gathering, Leao is likely to keep the shirt for the next match. Portugal sit top of the standings and Jorge Jesus's side will aim to maintain their winning record against Norway on Sunday.
