Mexico have parted with head coach Javier Aguirre after their World Cup last-16 exit, and assistant Rafael Marquez has been promoted to take charge.
A 3-2 defeat by England in the round of 16 brought Aguirre's latest stint to an end. The Mexican federation confirmed his departure on Wednesday, praising his professionalism, leadership and dedication during the cycle, and saying his legacy would endure in the country's football history after three spells in charge. It added that promoting Márquez formed part of a planned transition to maintain work started in 2024, strengthen the team's sporting development and prepare upcoming international fixtures.
Márquez, Aguirre's assistant since July 2024, takes on his first role as a national team head coach. The former Monaco and Barcelona defender previously led Barcelona's reserve side from 2022 to 2024.
Capped 147 times, Márquez offers continuity for El Tri.
His first major target will be the 2027 Gold Cup, scheduled from 19 June to 11 July, a tournament Mexico won in the last two editions.
