Austria have officially named their 26-man squad for the World Cup, with the announcement coming on Monday. Head coach Ralf Rangnick has gone with a largely experienced group as his side prepare for football’s biggest stage.

As expected, the squad is built around a number of established leaders and familiar names. Captain David Alaba is once again the defensive anchor, while veteran forward Marko Arnautovic, currently at Red Star Belgrade, also features despite being 37.

There’s plenty of top-level club experience throughout the squad too, with Marcel Sabitzerand Konrad Laimer both expected to play key roles.

Overall, there are no major shocks in Rangnick’s selection, although the Austrian press have pointed out a few less familiar inclusions. Among them are Alessandro Schöpf of Wolfsberger AC, Michael Svoboda at Elche CF, and David Affengruber, also representing Elche, who add some fresh faces to an otherwise settled group.

Austria head into the tournament with a clear blend of experience and stability, leaning heavily on their senior players as they look to make an impact on the world stage.
