Glasgow Rangers picked up an important 4-1 win over Aberdeen at Ibrox this evening, keeping their title hopes alive.
Rangers openned the scoring in the first-half when Tochi Chukwuani found the bottom corner from outside the penalty area. Their second followed shortly after the break, through Tottenham Hotspur loanee Mikey Moore, who tucked the ball into the far corner after a superb run.
Dennis Geiger gave Aberdeen a lifeline with his goal, but it wasn’t enough to rescue a point for The Dons as Nico Raskin and James Tavernier netted Rangers’ third and fourth goals of the evening to wrap up the win.
Danny Röhl made a single change to his side following their 1-0 win over St.Mirren last time out, as Thelo Aasgaard replaced Djeidi Gassama in the starting XI. Meanwhile, Aberdeen’s starting team saw four changes for Stephen Robinson’s second game in charge of the side.
Rangers forward Youssef Chermiti came close to openong the scoring after ten minutes, heading wide for the hosts. A break in play followed shortly after, to allow Aberdeen midfielder Afeez Aremu to receive treatment following an acrobatic piece of defending.
Chermiti came close again in the 19th minute, with his left-foooted strike hit the side netting. Moore almost forced an opening for Rangers on the half-hour mark, however he couldn’t bring the ball under his spell.
Aberdeen defender Jack Milne received the first yellow card of the game for a foul on Chukwuani. It was Chukwuani who found the opener for Rangers just five minutes later, guiding the ball past Dimitar Mitov and into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.
Moore also came close again as he saw his shot blocked from close-range, before Tavernier saw his strike saved by Mitov, bringing the first-half to a close.
The visitors made a double substitution at the break, which saw Dylan Lobban and Kenan Bilalovic replaced by Alexander Jensen and Toyosi Olusanya. Minutes later, Rangers doubled their lead through Moore who found the bottom corner after a lovely solo run.
Aberdeen pulled one back through Geiger, who finished calmly past Jack Butland from inside the area, denying the goalkeeper a clean sheet on his 150th Rangers appearance. Geiger received a yellow card in the 59th minute following a foul on Nasser Djiga in the middle of the park.
Rangers restored their two goal advantage on the hour mark, when Raskin stabbed the ball home from close range. The Dons responded by making another triple change, with Graeme Shinnie, Marko Lazetic and Topi Keskinen replacing Ante Palaversa, Kevin Nisbet and Aremu. Moments later, Emmanual Gyamfi saw yellow following a foul on Chukwuani.
Danny Röhl turned to his bench for the first time in the 72nd minute with Aasgaard making way for Finnish winger Oliver Antman. Aberdeen put together a lovely piece of play with 12 minutes left on the clock, but Lazetic fired into the side netting from close range.
Rangers made a double change in the 80th minute, when Chukwuani and Tuur Rommens were replaced by Connor Barron and Jayden Meghoma. They were quickly joined by Gassama and Bojan Miovski, whilst Moore and Chermiti made way. Miovski almost made an instant impact, forcing Mitov into a save down to his left-hand side. Gassama was also straight into the action, but his shot flashed wide of the post.
Miovski appeared to add Rangers’ fourth goal of the match, however it was ruled out by VAR for a handball in the build-up to the goal. Keskinen was shown a yellow card in the final moments for a foul on Antman, Tavernier converted the free-kick, firing into the top corner and bringing the game to a close, confirming a vital win for Rangers, and a third victory over Aberdeen in 2026.
