Ibrox Noise have to say we are delighted AEK Athens’ left back James Penrice rejected Rangers’ offer.
Fundamentally the former Hearts defender was subject to a bid from Rangers and Danny Rohl, and he and the Greeks said no.
This meant a very, very quick move to plan B, which should have been plan A.
Plan B? Tuur Rommens.
Furthermore looking at the careers of both, we feel we are getting a much better model. Regulars to Ibrox Noise will be aware we had no time for Penrice. A Scottish defender who hasn’t had a single call up at youth level never mind senior?
Meanwhile Rommens has 21 youth caps for Belgium.
Moreoever, Penrice has just 24 appearances in Greece’s top flight, and while he was experienced in the SPL, his Hearts days were mediocrity.
Rommens has 60 apps in the Jupiler Pro. The boy has talent.
Ibrox Noise is always incredibly wary of any player in Penrice’s age range who hasn’t even had a call up. Especially for a country like Scotland. Kieran Tierney and Andrew Robertson were the only options there, and one of them was never fit.
No, Penrice for us wasn’t one we wanted, and we weren’t thrilled we were in for him.
When attention turned to an experienced Jupiler Pro defender with many caps for his country, we preferred that.
Rommens’ CV exceeds Penrice’s by some distance, and he has assists and goals for both club and country.
For the reported £3.5M fee, we’re much happier with Rommens.
