Rangers have described the online racial abuse aimed at Djeidi Gassama and Emmanuel Fernandez as ‘simply unacceptable’.

Both players were involved in the 2-2 Scottish Premiership draw against Livingston on Sunday.

Danny Rohl’s side were initially trailing 2-0 to the basement club courtesy of goals from Brooklyn Kabongolo and Lewis Smith on either side of half-time.

Rangers struggled to recover until Fernandez sparked a comeback by rifling home a ferocious effort that sparked life into the visiting supporters.

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Mikey Moore drew Rangers level just seven minutes later, but they failed to land the decisive punch and were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.

Dropping points against the basement club was a massive blow to Rangers’ title hopes.

While a point was enough to maintain their place in second, Rohl’s side now trail Hearts by four points.

Gassama and Fernandez were subjected to racial abuse on their Instagram accounts after the game.

Rangers have confirmed that the content has been reported to Instagram’s parent company, Meta, and will be reported to the police.

They also made it clear that they will do everything in their power to identify the perpetrators.

“Djeidi Gassama and Emmanuel Fernandez were subjected to racist abuse on their Instagram accounts,” Rangers said in a club statement.

“For any player, opening a phone and seeing abuse tied to the colour of their skin is simply unacceptable.

“The content has been reported to Meta and will be reported to Police Scotland. Our immediate priority is the wellbeing of the players involved.

“We are in direct contact with Djeidi and Manny and have offered our full support both now and through any future judicial process.”

Rangers will now turn their attention to a Glasgow derby against Celtic on Sunday.
