Rangers fans are still completely in the dark over who will be the club’s next manager. Steven Gerrard of course has been the big name in recent times, with social media posts galore claiming this, that and the next thing. Odds were also heavily stacked in favour of him giving up retirement for returning to Ibrox. There’s also Russel Martin, the current Southampton manager, who is said to be leaving St Mary’s at the end of the season, and fans are far from enthused by the possibility of him. Even less enthused by the possibility of Morris Ross, former Rangers man himself, being his assistant.
We at Ibrox Noise are not entirely sure who on earth we actually want to see taking the reins. Gerard has now got experience, but none of it is particularly great, and indeed he failed at Villa and in the Middle East. And while he’s a big name, his managerial nous is up for major question. He did win 55 of course, but even that came with a catch.
The problem there was simply that he didn’t strictly stop 10 in a row. He nearly caused it. He took over when it was only 7. He failed 2 seasons in a row to win anything before finally benefiting from Covid and a lack of crowds to finally, finally, finally, did we say finally enough? Do it. It wasn’t exactly overly convincing how long he took. But that said, he is the biggest personality that we’ve had since Walter Smith, and he is the closest thing to the great man that we’ve had other than Walter, probably before and since his own return in 2007. If Rangers fans want a patriarch, a real strong personality, then yes, Gerrard could be a very accurate solution to that.
He is, however, nowhere near as good a manager as Smith was, which is a slight problem. We don’t know who his assistant would be. Obviously there was some slight speculation of Michael Beale, but we would certainly hope not.
Other assistants suggested would be Jordan Henderson his former Liverpool teammate and Henderson’s own career has been slightly questionable post-Liverpool. We don’t really know why he went to Ajax and now, well as assistant, yes, he has experience of the game but we don’t know that that necessarily proves someone’s suitability. Alan McGregor, Neil McCann, and Billy Dodds, to say the least, all have experience of the game. Not to mention the interim coach himself, Barry Ferguson. But none of them were a good management team, despite being good Rangers men and being experienced players and, in some cases, coaches.
So that wouldn’t necessarily prove Henderson to be an automatic success either. And there is, of course, Russell Martin, the other choice of manager. Fans are very much against that. They do not want him. Basically, his lack of experience at the top levels of being a serial winner, either as a player or manager, is a big problem. Rangers demand constant must-win yesterday, and Martin has no experience of that. Just because he played for us for three minutes, that doesn’t really mean anything.
The problem Rangers have, well there are a few problems Rangers have, but the biggest one is trying to reconcile where we are now with where we were pre-2012. The expectation trying to match what we can actually do. And unfortunately they just don’t go together too well at the moment. So you have a bit of a dichotomy of Rangers fans wanting success but also Rangers fans insisting on give him time FFS etc.
So, we are left in a situation where it only seems to be Gerrard or Martin. And we can’t say that we are massively enthused by either. End of the day, the board will make their decision, or they’ll fail miserably to do so, and it will be the new regime that makes the decision, if that is, there will actually be any changes at the top should they take over. But for now we’re in a bit of a quandary, and unfortunately, for now, that’s where we will remain.
Unless, that is, an unexpected announcement arrives from the club.
