Rangers fans are in meltdown this morning after the famous special one himself, Jose Mourinho, left Fenerbahce. Naturally, obvious conclusions were drawn, with many linking his exit to the possibility of him joining Rangers. Ibrox Noise joined in that chatter, because let’s be honest, Mourinho is about as big a name as football management gets, perhaps eclipsed only by a couple of his elite peers. But would we actually want the former Manchester United, Spurs, Porto and Chelsea boss to take over in Govan?
There’s no debate about his profile. Jose Mourinho is box office, pure Hollywood. He’s a world class manager — or at least, he used to be. And therein lies the problem. His wages, his demands, his ego would all come with a price tag fit for the stars, but his results no longer back it up. Mourinho has not won a league title since 2013. That’s twelve years without being a champion. He’s managed less league triumphs in that period than Rangers themselves. Once upon a time, he delivered silverware everywhere he went. But that knack dried up, and his stint at Fenerbahce is the latest failure on a growing list. Alan Hutton admitted as much, even while calling him “absolute box office.”
Granted, Turkish football is chaotic. Managers rarely last, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also just walked away from Besiktas. But Mourinho doesn’t carry the aura he once did. Yes, he fills press conferences. He brings headlines and drama. Yes, he’d put Rangers on a global stage. But would he actually save Rangers? Could he truly deliver? If he couldn’t do it at Fenerbahce, why would Ibrox be any different? Both clubs live under suffocating pressure, both have demanding fans, both demand trophies. He floundered there. Would it be any different here? Ally McCoist had his doubts, suggesting Mourinho or Steven Gerrard could fit the bill, but only with serious financial backing.
As always, Mourinho deflected. He blamed referees, corruption, the club, the players. Anyone but himself. And that’s the last thing Rangers need. This fanbase has suffered enough under managers who shirk responsibility. In fairness, and this is painful to admit, Russell Martin has at least once or twice hinted at taking tactical responsibility, however token it may be. Mourinho doesn’t even go that far.
That said, some fans dream of him striding into Ibrox with Barry Ferguson as his lieutenant. It’s a tantalising image. The swagger, the noise, the profile. But do Rangers truly need that, or would it just be another expensive circus? We’ve called it wrong before when backing certain names, so we won’t claim to know the perfect solution. One thing we do know? We were spot on about Martin. We didn’t want him, and sadly, we were right.
As for Jose Mourinho, we’ll leave that one in the hands of the football gods.
