Rangers fans ready for more signings after trio unveiled

Article image:Rangers fans ready for more signings after trio unveiled

So Rangers are now comfortable on the right wing with Andreas Skov Olsen signing on the dotted line. We have also added a central midfielder in Tochi Chukwuani and a left back in Tuur Rommens. Where do Rangers now need more? What is left?

Why central defence is unlikely

Fans keep arguing for a central defender, but the stats prove otherwise. We do not think that move will happen. Even though few are convinced by John Souttar, Emmanuel Fernandez, or Derek Cornelius, who is not fit, and Nasser Djiga, Rangers likely will not sign there this window. Unless a brilliant free agent like a David Weir appears, strengthening is unlikely.

The defensive numbers tell the story

The stats do not suggest Rangers need a defender. Defensively, we rate among the best teams in the league. We are not conceding many goals at all. Fans complain about Djiga or partnerships lacking communication. But goals conceded matter most. That number is low.

Jack Butland’s importance

Jack Butland has been excellent this season. He was the reason things were not worse under Russell Martin. Plus he was the one shining light then. He has also been very good under Danny Rohl. His handling can be shaky. His distribution can be hit and miss. He does not always claim brilliantly. But he is a top class shot stopper.

The Parkhead example

When Butland is in form, he makes huge saves. He was the reason Rangers won at Parkhead. He made eight saves. That stopped the home side getting goals He was crucial to that result. Rangers owe him a lot for that win.

Abuse that made no sense

It was ridiculous that Butland received abuse weeks ago. Even supporter groups criticised him. Ibrox Noise stuck by him. We had criticised his past conduct before. His form from March 2024 to late that year was poor. But this season, he looks like the player we signed. And we backed him up in face of a torrent of calls for him to be dropped.

Back to the real question

This slightly drifts from the point. Where do Rangers need to strengthen? Rangers still lack in some areas. We are not sure Danny Rohl uses traditional wide wingers. He just signed Skov Olsen, so the right wing is covered. But he does not always play a front three. His system is flexible.

Wingers under Rohl

Mikey Moore was shoehorned into a number ten role. He is meant to be wide. Djeidi Gassama and Oliver Antman have barely featured. Antman has been injured often. But still, questions remain.

Areas that look settled

Central defence probably will not happen. Right back almost certainly will not happen. Midfield now has Chukwuani. Danny Rohl has confirmed he is content there despite Connor Barron’s injury. Rangers may be looking for a loan to replace him.

Striker is the big concern

Up front may be the big miss. Rangers have three strikers. Bojan Miovski. Youssouf Chermiti. Danilo. Danilo has been told he is surplus. He is not needed and he has been poor. He has not been worth the money. Ibrox Noise reported Rangers wasted £11M on him.

Assessing the other forwards

Chermiti scored a double at Parkhead and has scored since. But he has not lit the place up. He was abysmal for too long. Fans are divided on him. He is strong and can hold the ball. But he does not score enough.

Miovski’s struggles

Miovski has just struggled. He has not shone at Rangers. Even when the team improved, he did not. He is not strong enough to be a target man. He is not quick enough to be diminutive and sharp. We are unsure what striker he is meant to be.

What Rangers really need

Signing Miovski permanently was a gamble. Ibrox Noise would endorse signing another striker. A proper hold up target man who scores goals. These players are not cheap. But that is what Rangers likely need.

The creative roles

Chermiti could work as a hold up man with vision. He could assist. He could link with Thelo Aasgaard and Mikey Moore as tens. We do not have many outstanding tens. We are not sure Rohl even works with one.

Final assessment

The squad is better now. January has been a very good window so far. But it still feels like one or two signings are needed.
