Ibrox Noise was predictably decried by many over the Lawrence Shankland exclusive, where we explained Rangers were interested in returning to that table. Lawrence Shankland to Rangers was back on.
A lot of the responses dismissed it as fake news, as made up, because he’s just signed a new contract.
And we’d have agreed with that stance if it wasn’t for the fact that Rangers’ takeover removed all bets from the table.
This is no longer a Rangers with no money – it chucked £45M (according to Kevin Thelwell) into the summer window.
The previous regime was not willing to part with much cash, although it had bid a nominal fee on Shankland.
This one is happy to dump £10M on League One rejects not to mention Premier League ones.
They have cash.
So Shankland’s new contract is irrelevant if he’s a player the board decides to pursue. It is only a topic of consideration at the moment, and he may be a target for January.
He would cost a few quid but this is a regime willing to burn £10M on Youssef Chermiti so Shankland would not be unsurmountable.
Of course there’s FFP and all the regulations, but abundantly clearly Rangers are remaining within those boundaries.
There will we imagine be some losses in the next accounts, but the board have finance.
Whether Shankland is one the new owners do want time will tell, but the finances are there to make it happen.
Still a speck irritating that the takeover happened while Shankland was a free agent, and Rangers didn’t pursue that signature.
Shankland was ready to sign for Rangers, if only that offer had come. Hard to materialise interest in players when it’s a new hierarchy taking over.
Whether Lawrence Shankland to Rangers still happens we shall see.
