With Rangers’ apparent sale of Cyriel Dessers to Greek Giants AEK Athens, Rangers are now going to be down our main striker. The 5 million sale to the former Feyenoord hitman has certainly been divisive among Rangers supporters.
As we discussed recently, we don’t mind the guy as a main striker, but he can’t be the only one. However, the owners or management appear to have a different idea to that altogether and are intending to sell him for less than we actually paid.
It must be remembered that the initial fee for Dessers was around 4.5 million, rising to 6 on appearances. He smashed the appearance clause and he ended up being a 6 million pound striker for us. If we’re selling him for 5 million pounds, there’s a loss there.
Is this a fire sale from the new owners? Possibly. If you look at Robin Propper going potentially for a few hundred thousand less than he cost, then that seems to be a very cynical start. Yes, we do need funds and we need to rebuild the squad, but it would be better to sell the players that we truly don’t need.
Okay, Propper would be one of those, but nevertheless it’s still at a loss in his case as well. The owners, American of course, 49ers Enterprises, are American financially. They want to make profit. That is their purpose in football. It always has been. It always will be. Yes, there are some American successes in owning football clubs in Britain.
It does happen, but Rangers aren’t exactly a cash cow and we can’t help but feel like there’s a bit of manipulation and exploitation going on here. We’re very cynical over the 49ers. We haven’t heard a word from the chairman or vice chairman aka the owners and the heads of the 49ers Enterprises. Instead, we’ve had nothing but silence. Of course, we know the cynics to this article would argue that they’re barely in the door and we need to give them time etc.
But communication is key at Rangers. We need it because it’s something we’ve not had much of in terms of high quality for many, many a year. We don’t get told stuff. Some would say, of course, defending this, that it should stay in-house and there is an argument for that. But at the same time, we do need to have some transparency.
It’s certainly a progress report from those in charge telling us where things are at. End of the day, Dessers leaving potentially for Athens isn’t exactly constructive in terms of rebuilding the squad and as we say, the fans are divided according to a poll we ran whereby around 55% said no and 45% said yes; it was close.
Is he worth selling? We’re not exactly sure. It’s a great move but it is going to be something that the management deem suitable and that be that. He won’t be the only one and although there are whispers of a 6 million bid in for the Croatian superstar that we’re apparently bid for, nevertheless, it doesn’t seem like the best start to a window to sell off to players, especially at a loss.
But hey, that seems to be the way things roll these days.
