Rangers fans stunned over Kevin Thelwell’s £45M claim

A new storm has hit Rangers fans after Kevin Thelwell claimed the club spent £20m net this summer. The Rangers sums simply do not add up. Supporters and Ibrox Noise alike have already pointed out the flaw. The reported spend sat at £35m while the reported sales hit £25m. Any child could work out the net figure is £10m, not £20m.

Thelwell’s figures raise eyebrows

The sporting director said it live on air in a full interview. It was not a slip of the tongue. If we take him at face value, Rangers spent £20m net. Add that to the £25m raised in sales and the outcome looks staggering. It suggests a total outlay of £45m. That is a number fans cannot fathom.

Did Rangers really spend £45m?

Let’s list the deals. £5m for Oscar Cortes, who is already out on loan. £5m for Antman, who has struggled to settle. £5m for Thelo Aasgaard, another struggling body. £4m for Fernandez. £10m for Chermiti. Add £2.5m to £3m for Miovski Those sums stack up to around £35m. Not £45m. That is why confusion reigns. When we see these numbers, yes, they are big but do they really all stack up to £45M?

Consequently is it possible Thelwell is including other fees to bump up the implied overall total? Agent fees? Sign on fees? Wages? There are a hundred hidden costs in all things these days, football transfers are no different.

Lying, mistaken, or creative accounting

There are only three possible explanations. One, Kevin Thelwell is lying. Two, Kevin Thelwell cannot add up. Or three, Rangers really did spend £45m this summer. If the third option is true, then the board has burned an incredible sum of money to make the squad worse than before. Fans might call it creative accounting. The Rangers sums simply do not add up. Many will simply call it typical Rangers.
