Hull City are eyeing up a loan move for Rangers midfielder Kieran Dowell this winter.

Hull City are keen on a January loan move for Rangers FC attacking midfielder Kieran Dowell, who is currently out of favour under Danny Rohl at Ibrox.

The 28-year-old has only featured twice thus far in the Glasgow-based club's Scottish Premiership campaign, and looks set to leave the Gers this winter, with a return down south on the cards.

Embargoed Championship side Hull could be the club set to swoop and bring Dowell back to England, according to reports from journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon page on Sunday morning.

The midfielder spent the second half of last campaign on loan at record-breaking League One champions Birmingham City, and could now reportedly be keen to have a crack at the Championship once again.

Rangers will be keen to move on some players and strengthen their squad after a lacklustre start to the season, and a move away for a fringe player in Dowell will likely be a priority in January to free up places in the squad.

Dowell is no stranger to English football, having previously enjoyed spells at Everton, Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Sheffield United, Wigan Athletic, Norwich City, and most recently Birmingham, where he played a big part in their title-winning League One season.

However, after his move north of the border to Rangers in 2023, his career has somewhat stalled, with game time being hard to come by. The 28-year-old has made just 38 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants in two years.

After his successful half-season at Birmingham, it's been the same old story for Dowell upon his return to Ibrox, and the midfielder could now reportedly be set to depart the club once again in the January transfer window.

According to Nixon, embargoed Hull are keen to add Dowell to their ranks this winter, as they can only sign either free agents or loans, having been sanctioned for failing to make loan payments on previous signings.

The former Norwich man impressed at Birmingham, scoring five goals and assisting a further four in 19 League One outings last term, and he could reportedly be keen to try his hand in the Championship once again.

The Tigers will be allowed to sign players on loan this winter, subject to EFL approval, and Dowell would bring a strong pedigree to Sergej Jakirovic's midfield unit.

Dowell's time in Scotland has been difficult to say the least, as he just can't seem to find regular minutes, and hasn't been able to impress to earn a spot in the Rangers squad on a consistent basis.

However, this is something that Hull must look past with Dowell, as his track record in the EFL is far better than his record in the Scottish Premiership.

The 28-year-old has 123 Championship matches under his belt, scoring 26 goals and assisting a further 12, showing he has the ability to unlock defences in the second tier, and come up with goals from the middle of the park.

Whilst the Tigers are limited in the business they can do, a short-term move for Dowell seems like a sensible option on paper, as he clearly has the ability to be a success at Championship level.
