The Scottish giants were heavily linked to fellow Posh ace Kwame Poku earlier in the window, but have reportedly had that deal hijacked by Championship side QPR.

Now Russell Martin and Co. are keen to raid another area of Darren Ferguson’s side this summer, and hope this time they can pull the move off.

According to journalist Pete O'Rourke via X on Wednesday, the Gers are in talks to sign Fernandez after missing out on Poku.

The 23-year-old centre-half enjoyed his first season of consistent first-team football last term, and could now be set for an Ibrox switch.

This isn’t the first time the defender has attracted interest from elsewhere, with Norwich City’s pursuit of Fernandez in the winter transfer window well-documented.

Personal terms ultimately led to that deal falling through, but the young talent may be set to finally exit the Weston Homes Stadium just six months later.

Fernandez made 30 League One appearances for Peterborough last year, making a further 12 appearances in cup competitions, and played the full 90 minutes as Ferguson’s side ran out 2-0 victors over Birmingham City in the EFL Trophy final back in April.

A series of injury woes and suspension issues limited the defender’s impact on Posh during the latter stages of the season, but his impressive performances have done enough to attract the attention of Rangers.

Ferguson described Norwich City’s successful bid for the centre-half earlier this year as "huge", so the Scottish giants could be expected to fork out a sizeable fee for his services this summer.

Fernandez is contracted with Peterborough United until the summer of 2027, having signed a three-year contract with the club last June, meaning Posh should be in a strong position to command a significant fee for their star defender.

Emmanuel Fernandez would be a big miss for Peterborough United

Although his presence in Peterborough’s backline began to lessen as the 2024/25 campaign reached its climax, Fernandez was a key cog in Fergurson’s system and would be a huge miss next term.

At just 23 years of age, he still has bags of potential, and his standout performances earlier in the season proved why clubs such as Norwich and Rangers are so keen to sign him.

His offensive capabilities can’t be undervalued either, with the defender netting five times in League One for Posh last season.

Peterborough managed to steer clear of relegation last year and even secured silverware in the form of the EFL trophy, but with outgoings in the ballpark of Poku and Fernandez, those connected with the club must feel slightly anxious about what the 2025/26 campaign may hold for the team.
