After years of EFL slop and indeed an especially bad window of it last summer, Danny Rohl, Rangers’ current manager, has certainly upgraded in the last 24 hours after recent reports. Tuur Rommens and Tochi Chukwuani are very much on Rangers radar, as two players Rangers have not only taken interest in, but have bid a combined total of £8M on.
These two are both internationals at youth level for their respective nations in Belgium and Denmark. Both are a distinct level above the League One and Championship slop Rangers have targeted in recent times. Following all those reports about the likes of Josh Windass and James Penrice, these two are a notable improvement. They have caps at youth level for their nations. They are also likely to succeed and get senior call ups as well.
We will have more in depth nature on their actual careers and current stats in due course. However, it is definitely an improvement to see two significant bids going in. They are for two quality young players who are both top flight standard. The Belgian Jupiler Pro League and the Austrian Bundesliga are two excellent levels. Of course, they are not quite Premier League or La Liga. However, they are far better than the League One and Championship nonsense Rangers chased for too long.
These two in particular are much closer to the standard Rangers need. The simple fact is Rangers should always move for top flight players. Rangers should always move for players with experience at top levels. Even if Belgium and Austria are not marquee leagues, they are still infinitely stronger than most others. They only fall short of the big five by a margin.
Indeed, Austria and Belgium are a decent level to say the least. Two players shining at that level are definitely of the calibre Rangers need. Rangers are not signing Lionel Messi any time soon. Rangers will not get Vinicius Junior either. Rangers have limitations on what they can get. However, getting top flight players and internationals, even at youth level, is a notable improvement.
Of course, the bids are only submitted. They have not necessarily been accepted yet. They are happening though. It depends on whether their current clubs, Sturm Graz and VVV Westerlo, accept the terms and the bid. It also depends on whether the players want to come to Rangers. Time will tell on that one. However, Tuur Rommens and Tochi Chukwuani are definitely better than Joe Rothwell and Josh Windass.
